Core Lab Members:
Michael N. Jones, Ph.D., Lab Director [CV]
Mike completed his graduate work at Queen's University in Canada under the supervision of the late Doug Mewhort, and then spent two years as a postdoctoral research fellow at the Institute of Cognitive Science, University of Colorado working with Walter Kintsch, Mike Mozer, and the late Tom Landauer. In 2006, he moved to Indiana University where he currently holds the William and Katherine Estes Endowed Chair in the Department of Psychological and Brain Sciences and the Cognitive Science Program. Mike's research can be broadly defined as computational approaches to human language and memory, and using cognitive models of human learning to develop better AI-based technologies. |
Abhilasha Kumar, PhD, Postdoctoral Fellow
Abhilasha completed her undergrad at IIT Delphi, and her PhD under Dave Balota at Wash U. Her research focuses on evaluating computational models of language such as large-scale associative semantic networks and neural network language models in unconstrained semantic tasks such as free association, sentence prediction, and language games. Abhilasha uses experimental research methods, language modeling, and psychological theory to answer questions about cognition and language. |
Sara Benham, PhD, Postdoctoral Fellow
Sara completed her undergrad at Southwestern University, her MS in Speech-Language Pathology at Purdue University, and her PhD under Lisa Goffman in Speech, Language, and Hearing at University of Texas, Dallas. Sara's research focuses on research program focuses on the acquisition of novel sounds and words in typical and atypical language development. She is leading our lab's projects on phonological-semantic integration in development and computational network models jointly with Linda Smith and Rick Betzel. |
Johnathan Avery, B.A., Graduate Student (Cognitive Science)
Jack completed his undergraduate work at the University of Nebraska. His primary research interest is in developing computational models to understand how humans integrate perceptual and linguistic information during learning. He is also interested in how humans search memory in strategic tasks, and the development of systems to assist in memory encoding and retrieval. |
Willa Mannering, B.A., B.Sc., Graduate Student (Cognitive Science)
Willa completed her undergraduate degrees in Cognitive Science and Computing Science at IU, and began in the PhD program in 2018. Willa's general interests are in developing computational models of human memory search and retention, with particular emphasis on bringing theoretical insights from cognitive models to applied problems in artificial intelligence. Most recently, she has been working on solving the problem of catastrophic interference in deep learning models of lexical semantics, and models of collaborative memory |
Larry Zhang, B.Sc., Graduate Student (Intelligent Systems Engineering)
Larry completed his undergrad degree at UCSD and is currently a PhD student in Intelligent Systems Engineering and Complex Networks & Systems. Larry's primary research goal is to develop and design tangible systems for neuropsychiatric detection and intervention. He seek to apply computational and cognitive modeling methodology to explore cheap, non-invasive measures of neuropsychiatric state, and make psychiatric healthcare more accessible to all. |
Molly Apsel, B.Sc., Graduate Student (Cognitive Science)
Molly completed her undergraduate degree at Duke University and joined the lab as a PhD student in 2021. She is interested in using computational methods to study cognitive biases and psycholinguistics. Molly seeks to use insights from cognitive modeling to address bias in artificial intelligence, especially as it appears in language. |
Marynancy Mwakalindile, Research Assistant
Marynancy is an undergraduate major in Cognitive Science. She is working in the lab on our projects related to collaboration in group memory and recall, in particular development of computational modes to better understand how groups might create and propagate false memories in social networks. |
